Severe flooding in southwestern China has caused significant destruction across parts of Yunnan province, resulting in damage to critical infrastructure and residential areas. Heavy rainfall over recent days triggered landslides and swollen rivers, particularly affecting the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, where dozens of homes and roads have been severely impacted.

According to local authorities, 27 houses have sustained damage, and 16 bridges were either damaged or completely destroyed as of Sunday. The mountainous terrain of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture made the region particularly vulnerable to flooding and landslides. Despite the extensive property damage, officials confirmed that no fatalities, injuries, or missing persons have been reported at this stage. The absence of casualties comes as a relief, especially as the disaster coincides with a national holiday, which typically draws many tourists to the area.
Elsewhere in Yunnan province, the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture also experienced significant disruptions due to flooding and landslides. Authorities reported multiple road closures, which have complicated rescue and recovery operations. Dense fog in the area further hindered rescue teams’ ability to access remote locations, delaying efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and provide necessary assistance to affected residents.
Emergency services responded swiftly to evacuate both residents and visitors from the affected regions. In the Meri Snow Mountain scenic zone, located within the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, approximately 300 tourists were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Several hundred local residents were also relocated to temporary shelters to ensure their safety as conditions deteriorated.
The Chinese government has mobilized emergency response teams, including search and rescue units, medical personnel, and logistical support crews, to provide aid to the stricken areas. Temporary shelters have been established to house displaced individuals, and relief supplies, including food, water, and medical aid, are being distributed to meet immediate needs. Infrastructure repair teams have also begun preliminary assessments of damaged roads and bridges to prioritize reconstruction efforts once conditions stabilize.
Meteorological agencies have warned that further rainfall is expected in the coming days, which may exacerbate existing flooding and trigger additional landslides. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, issuing weather advisories and coordinating with local governments to maintain preparedness. The prolonged rainfall poses ongoing risks to both residents and emergency personnel working in hazardous conditions.
Yunnan province, known for its diverse geography and popular tourist destinations, frequently experiences seasonal flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. The current floods underscore the challenges faced by disaster management teams in regions with complex terrain and limited accessibility. Officials have urged travelers to avoid affected areas and advised residents to remain vigilant as the situation evolves. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
